The CCP was in the midst of deciding whether they should recruit the literati as an association of writers that would disperse propaganda (especially to counter opposition from the right, who accused the CCP of oppressing literati and literature), or whether they should harness the writers’ power to sway the educated but unpolitical youths. Some scholars attribute the claims that Ding Ling penned in Thoughts on March 8 as being directly in response to a conflict surrounding the collaboration between May Fourth literati and the CCP. Due to this, the CCP aimed to attract prominent writers - primarily May Fourth literati - and make them submissive to the Party. Meanwhile, the importance of writers in the CCP was promoted once the party began the Yan'an Communism experiment in the late 1930s. By the time she wrote Thoughts on March 8, Ding Ling's writing demonstrated both the untenability of Western Feminism and the struggles that Chinese women faced at that time, as, despite her beginnings as an author writing feminist fiction, her writings, ultimately, strayed from fundamental feminist elements. Īs a member of the May Fourth Movement generation of writers, Ding Ling's evolution in writing reflected her transition from Republican to Socialist China. Her statements were part of the reason behind Mao Zedong's policies discussed in his Talks at the Yan’an Forum on Literature and the Arts. The essay garnered much negative attention from within the CCP, thus forcing Ding Ling to rescind her statements. She invites women to strengthen themselves against the oppression that they face, as well as advocating for the CCP to act on liberating women through creating a discussion on the topic as well as monitoring their own "moral conduct." Ding Ling further criticizes the double standard between men and women surrounding social issues such as divorce, abortion, and remaining unmarried. She understood the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) policies surrounding women's rights to be inconsistent and insufficient. The essay was originally published in Liberation Daily (解放日报 - jiěfàng rìbào), a newspaper that Ding Ling edited. Regarding the suicidal tendency variable, the associations were not statistically significant.Thoughts on March 8 ( Simplified Chinese characters: 《三八节有感》) was written in 1942 by Ding Ling, wherein she discusses her thoughts on politics and the role of women in China in the context of March 8, Women's Day. The highest percentages of suicidal behavior were found in the age group 15-17, in females, and in students from communes 5 and 9. The educational institutions that showed a higher suicidal tendency were 8 (11.94%) and 1 (8.78%). The depression associations that were statistically significant include: schools 2 and 7 females and age groups between 12-14 (highly significant), 15-17 (significant) and 18-20. The results showed that 38.8% presented a global clinical depression, the highest depression levels corresponded to the category of slight depression (21.3%) while 45% presented suicidal tendencies. The sample was represented by the total population of the mentioned school grades, 1298 students of both sexes, between the ages of 9 and 20. For gathering the data, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used. An association was made among these two groups of variables. The dependent variables were depression and suicidal tendencies, and the independent variables included: age, sex, educational level, school and commune. The study was an empiric-analytic research, in which a descriptive relational design was used. The general objective of the study was to determine the prevalence, depression grade and suicidal tendencies in 1298 students from the 8th to 11th grade of eight public schools of Manizales during 2000, 2001, first semester of 2002, and 2003. The research focused on theoretical topics such as: health, biological principles, psychological and social changes in the teenage years, depression aspects in teenagers, epidemiology, suicidal behavior categories, meaning of suicide in teenagers, alert signs, risk factors, treatment and prevention. Since depression is the main risk factor for suicide, it was chosen as the problem object of this study. in the age group 15-24 (11 youths per each 100.000 inhabitants). The highest number of suicides in absolute terms was seen. According to data of the Epidemic Bulletin, Manizales 2001, in the period between 19, 93 people committed suicide, of which 78 were men and 15 women. In recent years, administrative and assistance health institutions, have become concerned with the increase of suicidal behavior in the school population of the city of Manizales.
